The Presence VI is the sixth in a series of paintings depicting groups of museum visitors in front of famous historical artworks.
The composition of this piece was inspired by El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. While the act of death is seemingly absent in Presence VI, the vision of the Heavens is replaced with the gray emptiness of the wall. But this picture is still about the observation of death and eternal life of the frozen moments in this masterpiece.
Contemporary scientific advancements are increasingly blurring the boundaries between what was once deemed miraculous and what is now considered attainable. For instance, the potential for human resurrection, historically relegated to the realm of divine intervention, is being reconsidered through the scientific lens, with DNA as the foundational blueprint that could enable future generations to encounter their ancestors in unprecedented ways. Nicholaas Chiao's work directly engages with these possibilities by visually referencing the contemporary crowd of observers and life frozen in century-old masterworks. By incorporating these motifs, his painting establishes a dialogue between art and scientific immortality, foregrounding how visual culture can mediate questions about life, death, and rebirth. In the same way that Renaissance artists utilized visual symbolism to confront existential and spiritual questions, Chiao’s art prompts viewers to reflect on how ongoing scientific progress invites new interpretations of ancient themes. Ultimately, his work tightens the integration between scientific advancement and artistic inquiry, underscoring art’s continued role in shaping and interrogating humanity’s evolving frontiers.
