Artwork Description:
Nicholaas Chiao created The Hysteria around 2012 as a triptych featuring a screaming woman set against a deep black background. Influenced by the works of Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon, Chiao channels the stark distortions akin to Bacon's paintings, where vehement brushstrokes meld into the haunting expression of the woman, reflecting an intense struggle. The painting also draws directly from imagery of a church chorus photographed by Chiao during a collaborative project with a jazz musician he met at his 2007 New York exhibition, Time and Measures.
